slow blog
« on: November 30, 2002, 03:25:28 AM »
Blog takes up to a minute to load from the moment I click on the icon to when I can actually use it.  I don't remember it taking that long before--I recall it being almost instant, actually.  From the moment I start the program there is an icon on my task bar, but clicking on it does nothing.

Some answers to questions you might have:  this occurs when the computer has just been turned on and it's the only program running, as well as when it's been on for hours.  I'm running Blog 7.  It's located on my hard drive.

Is this normal?  Something I should worry about?  Am I too concerned?  Do I need psychiatric help?

Why do you say that?  Do you worry about being normal? Do you always worry?  Why do you think you are too concerned?  Psychiatric help is always needed when you use BLOG!   :P

Have you sent in your psychiatric dues yet?  It looks like your version of BLOG is the unpaid version.  If you had paid your dues you would feel that evrything is fine with BLOG and that your life is wonderful.    :D

Is it normal? No. Should you be concerned? Only if you want Blog to work instantaneously - if you don't mind the delay but are only concerned about it, then I should say don't worry - but ... take backups regularly just in case   Do you need psychiatric help? Hmm ... I'm not a psychiatrist so can't commment :p

The question to ask is, do other applications also seem sluggish to load?

If so, perhaps a defragmentation of your hard disk is needed.

No, no other apps are slow to load.

If I reinstalled blog, would that erase my existing files?  I am making backups, but I have to admit to being a little unclear as to how they work.

On a different note, I am not getting email notification when there is a response in the forum (yes, it's enabled in my prefs).  Once again, is it just me?

No, if you reinstall Blog it will only overwrite the EXE, the ReadMe and a few other constantly changing files - the datafiles are not overwritten unless they do not exist. However, this happens only with the Blog 7.0 installer (not the older installers) and even if you are doing an install over an existing install, I'd suggest a backup first - always be safe than sorry later :p

Hmm ... I haven't received any e-mail on member joins either. Let me check the configuration today. It might be that I messed something up on the server :p

Well, at leat the email notification works now.  :)

I reinstalled blog on top of my existing one, but that didn't speed things up.  I'm starting to believe that it's my computer itself that is the problem, which makes me sad...

Ugh, I knew I forgot something in my last post :-( I meant to say that reinstalling Blog probably would not help since there isn't much to Blog that depends on external stuff - no registry entries, no cached stuff etc. The only other reason I can think of for Blog to be slow is that the volume of data it has to work with is huge and this can't be since I have over a year's worth of entries in my installation of Blog and it is very fast. However, I would advice that you try installing Blog in a completely new folder with blank data files and checking to see if it is still slow to start. If so, you can eliminate the data file angle. If it does start up faster, I might have to consider an optimization feature for the databases.

I took the plunge and got rid of the whole thing, reinstalled it and now it loads just fine.  Very strange.

Thank you, Doctor.  I feel much better.  I think I can brave the outside world, now.

So what happened to the older entries? Did you restore from backup? Or are you going with a clean slate?

Ummmm... this sounds like the same problem I had.   Am having.  When I originally installed Blog, it popped right up.  After a while, though, it took a very long time to load.  I uninstalled it, reinstalled a fresh download of it, and then re-entered the entries by hand.  After the second install, it started by popping right up, and then it bogged down again.  Right now, it takes almost 2 minutes to load.   All the other progs on my 'pooter load the same as always.

(ps... I like the new forums - they're great!)

I backed up the older entries, just to be safe, and in a different directory.  Then I uninstalled blog.  All that ended up being uninstalled were blog.exe and two other programs.  Then I reinstalled it.  My old files were still there, as was all the information regarding ftp, templates, etc.  It now runs the way it used to.  I hope it doesn't slow down again, like silver linings has.

It seems that I only get every other email notification, otherwise I would have responded sooner...

Bugs all around?!?!

Do you have any custom code snippets on your toolbar? That seems to be the main source of bugs all around - and that's the only thing I can think of offhand for any sort of slowdown. I have been using the same installation of Blog for over a year on my home machine and no slow downs at all - so I am at a loss as to what might be going wrong.

As for the e-mail notifications, there are problems there. I think I solved it but then again maybe not. When I try to experiment with it, I get too many errors and so I have decided not too mess with it too much till I have time to devote to it :p

Eurk...  yep, I have a custom-code snippet on the toolbar.  I'll take it off and see if that fixes it.  Will let you know... :)
