What do the Flame/No Flame catagories in profiles and the Flame icons stand for? Just curious...

its like no flame means ur not flaming, ( haven't posted alot) when ur an inferno, u rock these boards.  it's just a method of how much you've posted here at the forums I think.
** originally i thought it meant not to be mean to this person, aka don't flame them, hehe**

Yep, it's a posting ranking system - everybody starts at No Flame and once you make 10 posts, you become Low Flame and then Bonfire, Forest Fire, Inferno etc. :p Incidentally, I'll be making the forums registered users only so that we can keep track of the posting counts :-)

Is this wise?  If this is a support forum - shouldn't you allow for *some* outside posts (non-members) to allow for questions to be asked by people that might want to try out the software but do not want to register until they have used the software?

Non-members can still read any of the posts - so they still have a source of reference and they can check out the forums and see if it is even worth registering. I do feel however that we should have some sort of control as to who posts - I've seen spammers invade boards and start posting all sorts of stupid stuff just because they are safe in tke knowledge that they can post anonymously. This way, I can keep track of posts, ban offending IP's *and* keep track of the posting counts :p

Hmm ... actually, I disabled PM's altogether because I felt they could be used to harass people (my opinion again - YMMV :p) but if a lot of people feel that PM's would be advantageous on the board, I might turn them on. What does everybody think? Should we start a poll on this? :p

PM's could be cool...seems like a non-abusive community...yes, let's see a poll.

I agree with Fahim.  Registration is free and, just like the mailing list, you can't ask a question here without registering.  Unlike the mailing list, you can browse the past support issues without registering.  Good trade off IMO.

I've already voted on this but will throw out my two cents here as well, PM's are useful but only if people actually read them.  As for the abuse, well that's why there's an administrator who can boot people if needed.

PM option

if PM is open, it's actually an individuals option to turn them on or off.
also, just because they are on, I guess you are not obligated to reply.
